10 Things I Like About Birding

Of course, there are things that we hate about birding, as per Kai Pflug’s blog of August 15, 2024. But, I think there are so many pluses. Otherwise, why would we be getting up early, baking in the sun or shivering in the cold, to get that one special bird?

1. Spending time with the nice birders. These are the people, often far away, who share their tips about favourite spots. If you meet up, they show you some amazing birds. They are fun to spend time with.

2. There is always something to learn. More and more information about bird biology, migration, and behaviours is being discovered. Also, learning about local birds and their songs helps keep the mind sharp and enhances our birding experience.

3. Beautiful locations. Birding takes us to many scenic areas, which also boast good food and cultural activities. This is a bonus when you travel with a non-birding spouse or partner.

4. The healing power of birds and nature. Studies have shown how being in nature is good for people’s physical and mental health. I know from personal experience that birding distracted me and got me through some stressful times.

5. Introducing others to birding. I get so much pleasure leading bird walks for my local club. It is wonderful to hear I helped someone see a lifer or I’ve introduced them to an activity they can enjoy for years. A bonus is the birds now have another person to advocate for them.

6. Bird cams. When you can’t be out there with the birds, it’s a treat to get a peek into birds’ nests, as well.

7. Gifts. Friends have it easy when it comes to birthdays and holidays. We get bird-themed gifts: books, jewelry, bookmarks, tee shirts, paintings, or vanity license plates. (The last is a personal favourite. Friends know I’m birding an area, when they see it. Also, it’s a great conversation starter with strangers.)

8. The Birding Buddy. A birding buddy is up for any adventure. They let you know about a rarity, which you chase together. They help you with your year list or even help you have a big year. Through every type of weather or any storms in your life, they know the best thing is to get out birding.

9. Birding Blogs. I like seeing what other birders have to say. I drool over the birds they see and the pictures they share. Then, I dream about where I would like to visit next.

10. The birds themselves. There is the joy of spending time with birds. It could be a good, long look at a lifer. It could be a hummingbird checking you out, because you are wearing red. It could be standing in the midst of swallows, as they swirl around you, hunting for insects. Or, it could be listening to a pair of birds dueting.

Birds are the passion that drives us out the door and into the natural world.
